Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria, set in a basin at the foot of the Vitosha mountain, in the western part of the country. It is an ancient city with layers of history, from Roman Serdica to the Ottoman and modern periods, with broad boulevards and churches and mosques side by side. For Macedonian visitors Sofia is well suited to a short city break over a weekend, easily reached by car and with affordable prices. The climate is continental, with warm summers and cold winters, so the city is most pleasant to visit in spring and autumn, while Vitosha offers winter trips too.
