Litochoro is a mountain town in Pieria, known as the gateway to Mount Olympus, the highest peak in Greece and the mythical home of the gods. It sits a few kilometres from the sea, where the mountain drops sharply towards the Thermaic Gulf, so it offers both mountain and beach close at hand. For Macedonian travellers Litochoro is a starting point for hiking towards Olympus and a quiet alternative to the coastal resorts. The climate is cooler than the coast itself because of the altitude: summers are warm and dry, and the evenings pleasantly fresh.
