The hottest months in North Macedonia are July and August, when almost the whole country sees hot, dry and sunny days. June is a warm start to summer, and the highest temperatures usually occur in the south and the lowland valleys, while the mountain places stay cooler.
Which months are the hottest?
The peak of the heat comes in July and August. Days are long, skies are mostly clear, and hot spells can run for a while without significant rain. June is often already warm, and early September keeps its summer warmth before autumn sets in.
Where is it hottest in North Macedonia?
The heat is not the same everywhere: terrain and elevation make a big difference.
The south and the lowland valleys
The greatest heat usually occurs in the south and in the low river valleys, around Gevgelija, Demir Kapija and Valandovo. The low elevation and the Mediterranean influence reaching up the Vardar valley intensify the heat here.
The Skopje valley
Skopje is often among the warmer cities because it lies in a valley surrounded by mountains. The terrain holds the heat and weakens the air circulation, so the hot spells feel more intense.
The higher and mountain places
Towns at higher elevation, such as Bitola, Kruševo or Berovo, and the mountain areas stay noticeably cooler, especially in the evenings. They offer a natural refuge from the summer heat.
Why is the south the hottest?
Two things come together in the south: low elevation and openness to the warm air masses that push up the Vardar valley from the Aegean. That is why parts of southeastern North Macedonia are regularly among the hottest in the country at the height of summer.
How to cope with the heat
In the hottest months plan outdoor activities for early morning or the evening, when it is cooler. If you want to escape the heat, the higher towns and the mountains offer cooler days and nights. To know exactly how hot the coming days will be, check the current forecast for your city.
