Halkidiki is a peninsular region in northern Greece, south of Thessaloniki, recognisable by its three prongs reaching into the Aegean: Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos. Kassandra is the most developed, with a string of family resorts and lively nightlife; Sithonia is greener and more natural, with pines and bays favoured by campers; and Mount Athos is a monastic republic closed to general visits. For Macedonian visitors Halkidiki has for decades been the favourite region for a driving holiday, with the widest choice of beaches and accommodation close at hand. Summers are hot and dry, with August sea temperatures of around 27 to 28°, and the season runs from late May to mid-September.
