The best time to visit Ohrid is late spring (May and June) and early autumn (September): the weather is warm and settled, the days are long and sunny, and the town is not yet packed with summer tourists. If your goal is swimming and a lakeside holiday, July and August are a safe choice; if you prefer walks, monasteries and a calmer atmosphere, pick the shoulder seasons.
What climate does Ohrid have?
Ohrid has a mild, transitional climate strongly influenced by Lake Ohrid. The deep lake warms and cools slowly, so it acts as a natural thermostat: it softens both the winter cold and the summer heat. That is why Ohrid is often more comfortable than the towns in the country's interior that have no such body of water nearby.
At about 700 metres above sea level, the evenings are cool even at the height of summer, which many consider an advantage over the hotter lowland towns.
What is the weather like in Ohrid by season?
Spring (March to May)
Spring starts cool and warms up steadily. May is especially pleasant: greenery, blossom and comfortable temperatures for sightseeing without the heat. Occasional showers are possible, typical of the transitional period.
Summer (June to August)
Summer is warm, dry and sunny, with long days ideal for the beaches and trips along the shore. The heat is easier to bear than in the interior thanks to the lake air. This is the main tourist season, so accommodation and beaches are in highest demand.
Autumn (September to November)
September is one of the loveliest times for Ohrid: the lake water is still warm from summer, temperatures are comfortable, and the crowds thin out. Towards the end of autumn the weather becomes damper and cloudier.
Winter (December to February)
Winter is mild by Macedonian standards, but damp and often cloudy. Snow in the town itself is rare and usually melts quickly. It is a quiet period, suited to a peaceful lakeside break.
When to come, depending on what you want
- For swimming and the beach: July and August, when the lake water is warmest.
- For sightseeing with fewer crowds: May, June and September.
- For a quiet, inexpensive break: late autumn and winter, knowing the weather is damper.
